If you’ve purchased GreenWise frozen blueberries from Publix recently, check your freezer before you use them.
The FDA announced a recall today for Frozen GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries sold at Publix stores in eight states, after 12 confirmed cases of E. coli O145:H28 infection were linked to the product. The recall was initiated by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., a Chilean produce supplier, after customers reported digestive illnesses following consumption of the berries.
This is an active outbreak recall — meaning people have already been sickened. Do not eat the affected product.
How to Identify the Recalled Blueberries
Only one specific lot of the product is affected:
- Product: Organic GreenWise Whole Blueberries (frozen)
- Size: 10-oz bag
- Lot Code: 60401
- Best By Date: February 9, 2028
- Sold at: Publix stores only
Check the lot code and best-by date printed on the back or bottom of your bag. Label images are available on the FDA’s website for easy identification.
Which States Are Affected
The recalled blueberries were sold exclusively at Publix locations in the following states:
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
If you purchased GreenWise frozen blueberries at Publix outside these states, your product is not affected.
What E. Coli O145 Can Do
E. coli O145:H28 is a Shiga toxin-producing strain of E. coli — the same category of bacteria responsible for some of the most serious foodborne illness outbreaks in recent decades. Common symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting, typically appearing 3 to 4 days after exposure and lasting up to a week in healthy adults.
For most people, the illness resolves on its own. But for certain groups, it can escalate into hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) — a potentially life-threatening condition that affects kidney function. Those most at risk include:
- Children under 5
- Adults over 65
- Pregnant individuals
- Anyone with a weakened immune system
If you’ve consumed the recalled blueberries and are experiencing any of these symptoms — especially bloody diarrhea — contact your healthcare provider immediately. Do not wait to see if symptoms improve on their own.
What to Do Right Now
If your bag matches the lot code and best-by date above:
- Do not eat the blueberries — even if they’ve been cooked, blended, or frozen again
- Throw them away immediately, or
- Return them to Publix for a full refund — no receipt required for recalled products
