Crockpot French Onion Meatballs

Healthy Fact of the Day

Use lean ground beef or turkey to cut fat, and opt for whole wheat breadcrumbs. You can also use low-sodium broth to keep sodium levels in check without sacrificing flavor.

These Crockpot French Onion Meatballs are juicy, cheesy, and loaded with slow-cooked caramelized onion flavor that transforms ordinary meatballs into comfort food perfection. The tender beef meatballs simmer all day in a rich broth with caramelized onions and Worcestershire sauce, then get topped with melted Swiss cheese for that classic French onion soup experience. It’s the kind of set-it-and-forget-it meal that fills your house with incredible aromas and delivers maximum flavor with minimal effort.

    Ingredients

    • 1.5 pounds ground beef

    • 1 cup breadcrumbs

    • 1 large egg

    • 1 teaspoon salt

    • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper

    • 2 tablespoons olive oil

    • 3 cups beef broth

    • 2 large onions, thinly sliced

    • 2 tablespoons butter

    • 4 slices Swiss cheese

    • 1 cup croutons

    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

    Directions

    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix until ingredients are well combined.
    • Shape the mixture into 1-inch meatballs using your hands and set them aside on a plate for a few minutes.
    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and brown the meatballs on all sides. Do this in batches if necessary.
    • Add butter to the crockpot and layer sliced onions on the bottom. Place the browned meatballs on top of the onions.
    • Pour beef broth and Worcestershire sauce over the meatballs and onions and stir gently to combine the sauces.
    • Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours, or until the meatballs are thoroughly cooked and flavors meld.
    • During the last 15 minutes of cooking, top the meatballs with Swiss cheese slices and cover until cheese melts.
    • Serve the meatballs hot, with a generous topping of croutons for added texture and flavor, if desired.

    Tip of the Day

“Always let your meat rest before slicing.”

Whether you're roasting a chicken, grilling steak, or baking pork tenderloin, letting cooked meat rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing allows the juices to redistribute evenly. This simple step keeps your meat juicy and tender, ensuring every bite is flavorful and moist. Bonus: It gives you a moment to plate your sides or garnish for a perfect presentation!

Why Restaurant Chicken Breast Stays Juicy and Yours Doesn’t

Properly cooked chicken breast that stays moist requires less added fat from sauces or oils to make it palatable, and cooking to the safe minimum temperature of 165°F rather than overcooking preserves more of the B vitamins and minerals that degrade with excessive heat exposure.
