Pizza Hut Just Changed Its Pan Pizza Crust for the First Time in Decades — Here’s Why

Healthy Fact of the Day

Pan pizzas tend to run higher in calories than thin crust options due to the thicker dough and oil used in the baking process — but the upside is that they're also more filling, which can actually help with portion control. Loading your pizza with vegetable toppings like bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, or spinach adds fiber and nutrients while keeping the overall calorie count in check. And if you're someone who's always left the crust behind, the Crispy Parm version might finally make eating the whole slice feel worth it — which means less food waste and a more satisfying meal overall.

Nearly one in five pizza eaters leaves the crust behind. Pizza Hut just made that a lot harder to justify.

The chain launched its new Crispy Parm Pan Pizza nationwide last week, marking the first significant update to its iconic Original Pan Pizza in over a decade. The new pizza bakes crispy parmesan directly into the outer crust edge and loads extra cheese across the entire pie — creating a crust that’s crispy and cheesy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside. It’s available now at participating locations starting at $10 for a medium one-topping, and it’s already drawing strong early reviews.

What’s Actually Different

The Original Pan Pizza has been a Pizza Hut staple since 1980. It’s one of the most recognizable pizzas in fast food history — deep-dish style, thick and doughy, baked in an individual pan that gives it a slightly fried, golden underside.

The Crispy Parm Pan Pizza keeps that structure intact and adds one meaningful upgrade: a parmesan crust baked into the outer edge that gives the crust a cheesy, slightly salty crunch that wasn’t there before. It’s not a garlic bread situation or a stuffed crust novelty — it’s a targeted improvement to the part of the pizza that nearly a fifth of all consumers reportedly throw away.

“Crust has always been at the heart of what makes Pizza Hut iconic. With its bold, parmesan-baked edge, we are confident the Crispy Parm Pan Pizza is a crust that can change minds and turn everyone into a crust lover,” said Melissa Friebe, Pizza Hut’s Chief Marketing Officer.

The Data Behind the Launch

According to company data, nearly 19% of consumers skip eating the crust altogether. That’s a significant portion of every pizza sold walking out of the experience incomplete — and it’s the exact audience the Crispy Parm Pan Pizza is designed to convert.

The strategy makes sense: rather than launching a completely new pizza format, Pizza Hut upgraded the element of its most iconic product that was most likely to go uneaten. The parmesan bake is the answer to “why would I eat the crust?” — because now it tastes like something.

How to Order It

The Crispy Parm Pan Pizza is available for a limited time through the Pizza Hut app, online at pizzahut.com, or in-store at participating locations nationwide.

  • Starting price: $10 for a medium one-topping
  • Also available: Large for an additional cost

Tip of the Day

“Always let your meat rest before slicing.”

Whether you're roasting a chicken, grilling steak, or baking pork tenderloin, letting cooked meat rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing allows the juices to redistribute evenly. This simple step keeps your meat juicy and tender, ensuring every bite is flavorful and moist. Bonus: It gives you a moment to plate your sides or garnish for a perfect presentation!

Your Rice Cooker Does Way More Than Rice — Here’s What You’re Missing

The rice cooker’s steam function is one of the most underrated healthy cooking tools in your kitchen. Steaming preserves more nutrients than boiling or roasting — particularly water-soluble vitamins like B and C that break down with heat and water exposure. If your rice cooker came with a steam tray, use it to cook vegetables or fish while your grains cook below. One appliance, one button, a complete and balanced meal with almost no effort.

The Stories Food Tells About Who We Are

Research on cultural identity and dietary health consistently finds that people with strong connections to their cultural food traditions — who cook and eat the foods of their heritage regularly — tend to have better dietary diversity, stronger social bonds around mealtimes, and greater overall meal satisfaction than those who have lost connection with their food heritage. The cultural dimension of food is not separate from its nutritional dimension — the context, meaning, and community that traditional food provides are themselves health-supportive in ways that the nutritional content alone does not capture.

Grilled Salmon with Orange Maple Glaze

Salmon is one of the richest dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which support heart and brain health, as well as high-quality protein and vitamin D. Using maple syrup rather than refined sugar in the glaze provides trace minerals including manganese and zinc alongside its sweetness, and grilling rather than pan-frying keeps the added fat minimal while delivering maximum caramelized flavor.
