Costco Recalls Bakery Madeleines at 11 Locations After Packaging Mix-Up Conceals Tree Nut Allergen

Healthy Fact of the Day

For anyone managing a tree nut allergy, this recall is a reminder of how important it is to inspect bakery packaging carefully — even from trusted retailers. When buying bakery items, especially from bulk or warehouse stores where products are pre-packaged in-house, always open the container and visually inspect the contents before serving, particularly to children or guests with known allergies. If anything looks unexpected, don't assume it's safe — return it and ask.

A labeling error at Costco’s bakery has triggered a recall affecting customers at 11 warehouse locations across nine states and Puerto Rico.

On April 7, 2026, Costco issued a recall for its Traditional Madeleines after discovering that containers labeled as the traditional plain variety were mistakenly packed with a different product entirely: Madeleines filled with Chocolate Hazelnut spread. Because the outer packaging identifies only Traditional Madeleines, there is no allergen warning indicating the product contains hazelnuts — a tree nut that can cause severe and potentially fatal allergic reactions in those with tree nut allergies.

The recall is limited in scope but serious in risk. If you purchased Costco bakery madeleines between March 30 and April 6, 2026 at one of the affected locations, it’s worth checking what’s actually inside that container before anyone eats them.

What Happened

This is a packaging error, not a contamination issue. Costco’s Chocolate Hazelnut Madeleines (item number 2011285) were inadvertently placed in containers printed with the Traditional Madeleines label (item number 2000012). The two products look similar enough in their clamshell packaging that the mix-up may not be immediately obvious — but the contents are distinctly different, and for someone with a tree nut allergy, that difference matters enormously.

Under FDA requirements, any product containing a major allergen — including tree nuts — must carry proper allergen labeling. Because the Traditional Madeleines label contains no such warning, Costco recalled the product to protect customers who may be allergic to hazelnuts.

How to Tell If You Have the Recalled Product

The recalled containers are labeled as Traditional Madeleines and contain heart-shaped cookies. A closer look inside the packaging reveals the mix-up: some madeleines will have a pink raspberry filling, while others contain a darker chocolate hazelnut filling. The presence of those chocolate hazelnut-filled cookies is the giveaway that your container is part of the mislabeled batch.

Costco has posted a photo of the recalled product on its recall notice page to help customers identify the packaging.

Which Locations Are Affected

The recall covers purchases made between March 30 and April 6, 2026 at the following Costco warehouses:

  • Missoula, MT
  • Burlington, WA
  • East Peoria, IL
  • Bellevue, WI
  • Pleasant Prairie, WI
  • Chico, CA
  • Thornton, CO
  • Gilroy, CA
  • Bayamon, PR
  • Pembroke Pines, FL
  • Fairfax, VA

If you didn’t purchase madeleines from one of these locations during that window, your product is not affected.

Who Needs to Act — and Who Doesn’t

This recall matters most to customers with tree nut allergies or sensitivities. Hazelnuts are classified as a tree nut and are one of the nine major food allergens recognized by the FDA. For people with tree nut allergies, exposure to hazelnuts can trigger reactions ranging from hives and vomiting to a severe drop in blood pressure or anaphylaxis — a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate medical attention.

For customers without tree nut allergies, Costco has confirmed that the mislabeled product is safe to consume — the issue is the labeling error, not the safety of the food itself. That said, returning the product for a refund is an option regardless of your allergy status.

Notably, This Isn’t the First Time

Worth noting: this is the second time in 2026 that Costco has recalled a bakery item due to a nearly identical packaging error. In late January, the chain recalled its Caramel-Filled Mini Beignets after those containers were also found to contain Chocolate Hazelnut-filled pastries — again with no allergen warning on the label. That recall spanned 22 states. The Madeleine recall is smaller in scope but raises similar questions about bakery packaging controls.

What to Do

If you have the recalled Traditional Madeleines and have a tree nut allergy — or live with someone who does — do not eat the cookies. Return the container to any Costco warehouse for a full refund. No receipt is required for recalled bakery items at Costco.

For questions, contact Costco customer service directly through the Costco website.

The Bottom Line

Costco recalled Traditional Madeleines sold at 11 warehouse locations between March 30 and April 6, 2026, after discovering the containers were mislabeled and actually contained Chocolate Hazelnut-filled madeleines. The undeclared hazelnut allergen poses a serious risk for customers with tree nut allergies. Return the product to Costco for a full refund if you purchased it at one of the affected locations.

Tip of the Day

“Always let your meat rest before slicing.”

Whether you're roasting a chicken, grilling steak, or baking pork tenderloin, letting cooked meat rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing allows the juices to redistribute evenly. This simple step keeps your meat juicy and tender, ensuring every bite is flavorful and moist. Bonus: It gives you a moment to plate your sides or garnish for a perfect presentation!

The Table We Set for Ourselves

Research on dietary patterns and long-term health consistently finds that the single most predictive factor of sustained nutritional well-being is not the adoption of any specific diet or the avoidance of any specific ingredient — it is the development of a positive, curious, non-anxious relationship with food and cooking. People who find genuine pleasure in cooking and eating, who approach food with curiosity rather than fear, and who maintain regular shared meals as a consistent feature of their lives demonstrate better dietary quality, better metabolic health, and better psychological well-being over time than those who approach food primarily as a source of nutritional management or anxiety. The relationship with food is the intervention. Everything else follows from it.

Fish Tacos with 7UP Batter

White fish is naturally low in calories and fat while being high in lean protein, B vitamins, and minerals like selenium and phosphorus. Using carbonated soda in the batter reduces the amount of batter needed to achieve crispiness, since the bubbles create lightness rather than density. Serving with fresh cabbage adds fiber and vitamin C while the crunch factor keeps every bite interesting.

Bang Bang Salmon Salad

Salmon is one of the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which support heart and brain health, and grilling rather than frying keeps the added fat minimal. The sweet chili and sriracha in the dressing provide bold flavor from chiles, which contain capsaicin—a compound associated with anti-inflammatory benefits—making this indulgent-tasting salad genuinely nutritious from top to bottom.
