Mozzarella-Stuffed Meatballs in Tomato Basil Sauce is a delightful and protein-packed dish that combines flavorful meatballs with gooey melted mozzarella cheese. This recipe, when enjoyed in moderation, provides a good source of lean protein and the satisfaction of a classic Italian-inspired meal.

Ingredients

 

For the Mozzarella-Stuffed Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef (lean)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Mozzarella cheese, cut into small cubes

 

For the Tomato Basil Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

Instructions

 

For the Mozzarella-Stuffed Meatballs:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, minced garlic, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

  3. Take a small portion of the meat mixture and flatten it in the palm of your hand. Place a cube of mozzarella in the center and encase it with the meat, forming a meatball.

  4. Repeat the process to make all the meatballs.

  5. Place the stuffed meatballs on the prepared baking sheet.

  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the meatballs are cooked through.

 

For the Tomato Basil Sauce:

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.

  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until softened.

  3. Add minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  4. Pour in crushed tomatoes, chopped basil, salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using). Stir to combine.

  5. Simmer the sauce for 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  6. Once the meatballs are cooked, transfer them to the skillet with the tomato basil sauce. Coat the meatballs in the sauce.

  7. Serve the Mozzarella-Stuffed Meatballs in Tomato Basil Sauce over pasta, rice, or with crusty bread.
